SSA sponsored event: Rebecca Hensley

Although our faculty advisor Rebecca Hensley planned to have a conversation with Reginald Span on this subject, we recently discovered he will not be able to participate because of illness. However, Ms. Hensley will still present her information!

Show your support by announcing the event in your classes, inviting friends, and attending the event if you are available.

Hope to see you on Wednesday in the Southeastern Room!

meeting 3: 2/18/10

This meetings topics:
  • We started the meeting by talking about Amnesity International's website on building wells in other countries who need access to clean usable water.
  • We talked more about budget cuts, which brought us to the topic of the March 4th national protest. We will be boycotting school/wearing t-shirts(more plans to come) on March 4th in honor of the protest.
  • We discussed how the nation is starting to change the requirements for entry into 4 year colleges to keep the lower class in 2 year/community colleges. Louisana is the flagship school for this.
  • " The Dream is Alive, but Where is the Hope?" What was to be a debate between Rebecca Hensley and Reginald Span, Reginald Span can not make it. Ms. Hensley will still bring her side to present. It is February 24th in the Student Union room 223 the Southeastern Room, at noon. SSA is sponsoring this event.
  • SSA is also sponsoring David Embrick's speech "Dog Days, Cat Days, and Wearing Flip-Flops to Work: Just What Does Diversity Mean in an Era of 'Color Blindness'?" he will be coming to campus March 2. His speech is about how corporations and universitys using "diverse"as a way not to benefit who it was originally designed for.
  • We talked about the movie "Faubourg Treme, the untold story of black New Orleans", here is a link to learn more about the movie:http://www.tremedoc.com/
  • We discussed the idea of having a white history month. Showing movies about the history of the "white" and their "dominations" over other races. Nothing is planned too delicately, more plans to come!
  • Last, we talked about digital media/enviroments that cause trauma.

meeting 2: 2/4/10

To recap and fill in for the members who could not make it, Timothy Hendon came to the meeting to talk to us about SGA. He is part of SGA and became concerned about how SGA uses their money, especially connected to the budget cuts. He saw that there were many flaws with their allocations and tried to do something about it. He tried to change things for the better, and the people in charge of SGA did not want to compromise. They discriminated against him, humiliated him, and stigmatized the idea of change. This was really great to hear because of SSA's plan to speak out against the budget cuts. We also talked about how the Study Abroad program cut the scholarships given to students in half, even though they have not seen any budget cuts to their department. We encouraged the importance of attending the State of the University Address this Monday, where members of SGA, and the President of Southeastern spoke to the student body about their cut backs and ideas for this semester.

meeting 1: 1/28/10

At the first meeting, present students elected officers for the spring semester. Elected officers are listed below:
Faculty Advisor: Rebecca Hensley
President: Robert Randall/Bonnie May
Vice President: Christina Schneider
Secretary: Mallory Gannon
Treasurer: Natalie Shelton
P.R. Coordinator: William Boughan

The first thing we went over was a recap of last semester events. Last semester was great! We got a lot accomplished. This semester we strive for accomplishing more! SSA is growing each semester. It is expected to continue to grow, with growth comes responsibility.
Here are some ideas we discussed for this semester:
  • Make open forums more public. Our open forums have always been a success, but they have usually consisted of only members of SSA. This semester we want all students on campus to participate, inviting them to our open forums to hear their voice as well. Some ideas included moving the open forum to the middle of the union, and using microphones.
  • Starbucks and fairtrade awareness on our campus. Also, we will be thinking about attending auxilary services meetings to talk about starbucks and other fast food companies in the union.
  • The next thing we want to do is bring awareness to our campus about the budget cuts this year. We have big plans to gather as many people as we can from public universities across Louisiana to bring this to the state. Louisiana is the flagship school for university and healthcare budget cuts. Lets do something about this! YOUR VOICE IS MORE POWERFUL THAN YOU KNOW!
